  1. Scott Scott says:

As with many books the subtitle Foreign Writers in Northern Italy since 1800 is important than the title Notably I'd also put a pretty hard stop on anything much past 1960 and for manymost of the chapters even 1920 is a time untouched With such provisos this is an interesting book looking at some classic writers and their thoughts on trips in Italy Notably the author allows that the writers' scribblings are often reflections on their individual character than the towns themselves Still if you go in without a solid understanding of English writers of the mid late 19th century you will likely find yourself a bit adrift The focus is overwhelmingly on traditional art and churches style travelogue with minimal coverage of the now long gone theater and modern cultural scenes That said the broader cultural and scenic tableaux that start each chapter are easily the best parts This is a slim volume especially given the copious and much appreciated notes and bio biography in the back Still coverage outside of towns is effectively entirely lacking Even areas that are freuently referred to like Lake Como don't receive their due As a guidebook this is of marginal modern utility at best though it can both illuminate and point the way to other perspectives
