I don't know what it is that's so fascinating about snowmen but just like scarecrows they captured my heart as a child and I've loved them ever since We draw them decorate with them make snowman Christmas cookies watch them on TV and build them outdoors the first chance we get So when this book was staring at me at the bookstore there was no leaving it behind I knew my family would enjoy it and we surely have for the past two winter seasons Who made the first snowman? Who first came up with the idea of placing one snowball atop another and then sticking a carrot in the top sphere? The author set out on a uest to find out who made the very first snowman Here in this book he presents all of his extensive over seven year research on the history of the snowman It goes way back in time all the way to the dark ages The book is somewhat of a snowman 'encyclopedia' chock full of beautiful photos from around the world which I'll admit was my favorite aspect of the book There's so much to learn here though world records including the largest and smallest snowman snowmen in pop culture my favorite the Burl Ives snowman from the original children's special snowman festivals appearances of snowmen with historical figures and even wars how they're celebrated in other cultures use in art and politics and fun little facts about snowmen that are sure to surprise you We had no idea just how much historical background the snowman actually had It was nostalgic for me in many ways especially looking at some of the old vintage snowman ornaments and decorations from the past We also loved the fun facts Average number of calories burned per hour building a snowman 238If you like snowmen definitely give this book a try My whole family has enjoyed it including the children My only wish is that the organization were different; it would be nice in chronological order There are a few parts that are uite offensive too but it's fairly easy to skip over those It's good to be aware of that if you're viewing this with young children This book is one to revisit over and over again

Who made the first snowman? Who first came up with the idea of placing one snowball atop another and then sticking a carrot in the top sphere? What evidence could be left? Random pieces of coal once the button to an ancient snowman’s coat? This book is written with historical background proper researched with all the facts and figures; dating back to the origin of snowman The word Snowman became official when it first appeared in the Oxford Dictionary in 1827 after appearing in a shepherd’s calendar The book starts with the worldwide records of the tallest snowmen; then it goes on and on about the historical festivals advertising horror movies adaptation which were miserable though war arts the revolution of 1870 the massacre of 1690 the miracle of 1511 ice age and the oldest surviving snowman; all while beautifully illustrating all the facts I loved this book Uniue concept Well researched Eye catching illustrations Fun Fact Psychologists say that seeing a snowman in your dreams suggests that you’re emotionally cold or have perhaps behaved insensitively and cold heartedly 😄☃️

This book was uite a surprise I had no idea that the snowman had such a lengthy and interesting history From postcards print ads commercials packaging songs movies and he is the lowest paid actormodel ever Reading about his denigration drinking women assaults made me realize I didn't know this poor guy at all Seriously there was so much information in this book that I had never known before I read it uickly and found myself turning back and to double check information The illustrations were amazing The author's personal collection of Snowman memorabilia was uite extensive and showed various times in his history If you are an arts and Photography buff you would love this book Learning about the development of the snowman in art including sculpture photography lithograph and was interesting I could go on and on about what was contained in this book in just a bit over 200 pages but I recommend you pick it up BTW this is not a children's book they would be devastated to see some of the ways the snowman was used over the years Now if there was snow on the ground here I would take my grandchildren outside today to make our own snowman As one blurb says With over two hundred illustrations The Illustrated History of the Snowman is a truly original winter classic smart surprisingly enlightening and uite simply the coolest book ever I am glad I picked this one out The publisher Rowman Littlefield Globe Peuot generously provided me with a copy of this book upon my reuest The rating ideas and opinions shared are my own

Here is a compendium of all that is snowman From advertising to movies and historical photographs this book examines how the snowman has fascinated us over the centuries The photographs are wonderful they encompass the cute the bad and the ugly snowmen Who would have known the snowman was so widely depicted and utilized throughout so many representations The author is also a snowman collector many of the photographs depict pieces of her collection This is a wonderful homage to our friend the snowman
