This is a cozy mystery that takes place in Burgundy FranceKatherine is an American living in Reigny sur Canne She offers to help out with tourist excursions in the area and while giving a tour at a museum she and the group she was guiding bump onto a death body From then on Katherine and her friend Pippa must find out the murderer to avoid becoming the police's prime suspects or the murderer's next targetThis was the second book in the series I had not read the first book and found myself at a loss sometimes it would have been helpful if the author had provided  background story on the characters and the events from the previous book The setting is well described and the imagery is excellent Although the book is described as a mystery I felt the plot spent some time on descriptions about the food and conversations with other characters that did not move the plot forward or made the story  intriguingOverall it was ok I recommend it to readers of cozy mysteries and travel books  I received an advance copy from the publisher via Netgalley

I didn't feel like I missed too much in this second book since the characters that were the main ones were well explained but I probably should have read the first book for a little background information At times I was just a little bit confused about a secondary character or two I enjoyed reading about the French provincial life could sort of picture this little town getting ready for Christmas and thought that along with Katherine and Michael their friends Pippa and Jeannette were people that I would also enjoy knowingI was a little distracted from the main mystery by so much detail to social life but I imagine that sets the stage for imagining the town scene It was a good mystery and just as in the US the police seemed to think that Katherine and Pippa may have had something to do with it since they were there when the body was found It wasn't a huge stretch to guess the killer but I have to admit I was fooled and thought it was someone else until the revealThe ending was fairly exciting knowing that Katherine was safe and the police had things under control I do like the friendship between Katherine and Jeannette Jeannette could nearly be her granddaughter but I think Katherine likes to mother her since the girl has no mom With Pippa it's a bit different but Katherine did prove to be a good and faithful friend to her Pippa was pretty fun sometimes to paraphrase Katherine with the sense of a toddler She was a budding mystery author so I could definitely see why she was drawn to the murder and wanted to poke around and find out things she could write aboutI voluntarily read and reviewed an e copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley

I love France and I love to read books about France “Dressed for Death in Burgundy” is a mystery set in a small village and minor town in the Burgundian region of that country I thought it would be a fun book and it isI don’t like spoilers so I am going to be very careful what I say The protagonist is a middle aged American woman named Katherine who has been resident in France for three years Her French is pretty good but not perfect and for the first part of the book her husband is out of the country and she is on her own One thing leads to another and she comes across a murder scene She is not a detective and does not want to be one but she is curious about the murder and does stick her nose in a bitThe surrounding cast of characters mostly French but including Katherine’s American husband and a rather clueless young Englishwoman are wonderfully drawn The author is obviously acuainted with this corner of France and fond of it Although the mystery is good and I for one did not guess whodunit much of the pleasure of this book comes from Katherine’s everyday life in this uiet rural area of FranceThis was an enjoyable book to read on many levels The first half is a bit slow but it is worth persevering as the last half just flies by I did not guess the murderer even though the author played uite fair and someone perspicacious than I could probably figure it out I was given an ARC by the publisher and NetGalley for my honest opinion

What a neat series and I am ashamed to say I haven’t read the first book yet That will be remedied but I am so happy I read this latest from an author that sounds like my kinda of gal I mean she loves France as do I but Susan C Shea has also given readers the ability to go there through her books and solve mysteries It is certainly my kind of book with this combination

American artist Katherine Goff is taking a party of tourists through the costume museum when they discover a dead body in one of the tableaux Imagine it's the butcher's wife Not only is the museum usually kept locked under the eagle eye of its curator but who would want to kill the pleasant woman who made the best pate in town? Katherine's friend hapless English would be author Pippa makes herself a suspect by trying to investigate in the interests of her mystery story writing Katherine does come up with answers but she's a good step behind the police

Katherine Goff American expat who lives in a small town in France with her musician husband and pets is trying to live a uiet life interrupted only by the fact that her husband Michael is in the states recording an album with a famous country star It's getting close to Christmas and she can't wait to have him back home for the holidayBut all does not stay uiet for long While doing a favor for a friend driving American tourists on a museum tour she encounters the worst possible scenario While touring the museum they find a dead body that turns out to be the wife of the local butcher While Katherine would like nothing than to leave it behind her and allow the local gendarmes to handle it her friend Pippa a British aspiring writer wants to solve the murder and use it in her novel fictional of course But when Pippa starts looking for clues she doesn't realize that it makes her look suspicious since she seems to be where the clues are foundSo Katherine feels the need to help her friend albeit reluctantly and just wants the matter settled before Michael gets home and finds out she's been digging around in another murder Only Pippa won't let it go and now she's dragging Katherine's little friend Jeanette into the mix and Katherine has no choice but to help and try and find out who wanted the butcher's wife deadThis is the second book in the series and I will say that it has improved over the first The plot was better and there weren't so many people as to be confused about who was who which is a good thing in any bookI did begin to wonder if these people ate anything but sausage though Their cholesterol must be sky high in France Every time you turned around that's all anyone was eating AnywayI found this book to be darker than the first Winter in France in this small town was depressing; and there was really no feeling that Christmas was an enjoyable time of year No visiting each other's homes no decorations no baking etc I was surprised about Katherine's financial situation because in the first book we were given the impression that if they could just pick up and move to another country they must have had the financial means to do so but in this book they are just struggling by and hoping Michael can make a go again of his career It was as I said a surprise to say the least Pippa also appears to be struggling and since she doesn't seem to have a job where is her income coming from? I pay attention to details It may have been mentioned in the first book but if so it was only a sentence or two and should have been reiterated in this oneWhile I would have liked to enjoy this book unfortunately I didn't feel a connection with any of the characters and that's a big plus in a book If you don't feel a connection then the book doesn't have any kind of an impact on you Not the death not the solving of it In this case because I never really connected with Pippa or Katherine I didn't really care about what was happening to them at any given time Also there is a bit of a spoiler below but I have hidden itview spoilerAnd at the last I was extremely disappointed in Katherine's revelation about Eric and can only imagine that it was thrown in there to cause dissention in the next book ie friction between Eric and Michael; Michael finding out and leaving Katherine even temporarily; or Eric trying to make a play for Katherine I truly hope that it is not brought up again in the next book hide spoiler

Summary from GoodreadsAfter finding herself mixed up in a murder investigation the previous Summer Katherine Goff’s life simply has not been the same Her husband has been in the US recording a new album the Burgundy region locals are finally starting to see her as a real neighbor and Katherine has even started helping out with “tourist” excursions It seems she’s finally found her place in the small community of Reigny sur CanneBut when Katherine stumbles across a body in the local museum during a tour she finds herself caught up once again in a whirlwind of gossip and speculation When the police zero in on her friend Pippa as a suspect Pippa and Katherine team up to find the real killer and clear her nameHowever the clues they discover the the real killer wants them off the trail When Katherine and Pippa start receiving threats they must decide what they are afraid of—the police getting it wrong or possibly becoming the killer’s next targetsMy ThoughtsLast year I read and adored the first book in this series Love Death in Burgundy I remember wishing and hoping that it was going to be the beginning of a series because I had found it to be such an enjoyable read I was so thrilled when I saw this book and realized it really was part of a series It was an absolute joy to jump back into Katherine's world and Burgundy yet again One of my favorite things about these books is the sense of place that you get while reading them I've never been to France but reading books like this sure makes me want to go I can't get enough of just the little every day details that are included about Katherine's life there The small specialty shops she goes to in order to by certain foods and her distaste for big shopping centers is so much fun to read about This book is actually told from two separate viewpoints Katherine's and a secondary character from the first book named Pippa I was just thinking that we got of the details I was mentioning before in the previous book but I think that is because the time was split between Katherine and Pippa I preferred Katherine's point of view myself but I did mostly enjoy both It's funny but I was less worried about the mysteries when reading these books and just immersed in the every day life that Katherine was living I will say that the mystery in this book had me intrigued in comparison to the first book I also really liked the ending I felt like it was just the perfect feel to this cozy series and left me wishing and wanting a third bookOverall I enjoyed my time with this book and these characters so much It was such a delight to dive back into this world that the author has created with characters that I've grown to actually care about I love the little details that the author adds to each book that makes you feel like you are actually there while reading I just found myself so completely immersed in this book that I was almost sad to see it end I wasn't ready to say goodbye to Katherine and her friends uite yet I will say that I skimmed a few Goodread's reviews after finishing this one and it looks like readers may benefit from reading this series in order It's only two books so not too overwhelming to think about and I think that those details that carry over from the first book will only enhance your enjoyment of this one In the meantime I will just be sitting over here pining and wishing for book three A solid four star read and a series that I can easily recommendBottom Line A wonderful follow up to the first book and has cemented my love of this seriesDisclosure I received a copy of this book thanks to the publisher and NetGalley Thoughts are my own

Dressed for Death in Burgundy is a cozy mystery that follows Katherine Goff and her lonely two week stretch as her husband is away in the US working on recording a music album While helping a friend by hosting a small group of tourists Katherine walks into a murder of the local butcher's wife who has been strangled and then redressed in the town's small museumThe story takes place in Burgundy France right around Christmas time It was a very interesting and realistic portrayal of what the area is actually like in general and during the winter While the weather is cold the story also touched on cold and complicated things as well Katherine is in her mid fifties married but childless She's struggling to find her place on a severely limited income balancing her hope for her husband's success with her loneliness that is only certain to increase if he is successful in his recording contract and will be gone for weeks at a time on tourAdd to that while Katherine is endeavoring to learn the language and make friends she still feels very cut off and longing for friendsA great story providing a true to life account of someone relocating to France and the difficulties and pleasures of the task

This is book 2 in the French Village Mysteries but it reads okay as a stand alone The story drags somewhat in the beginning and I never did get caught up by any of the characters They all seemed rather shallow Pippa was very immature and the fact that she didn't take the time to learn the French language or at least a few common words or phrases bothered me The plot line was plausible but I would have liked to see a little action and less of Katherine's constant translating for those who didn't speak French even though she had below average fluency herself Since this was a small village I would have liked to have seen Katherine have a few uniue characteristics that made her stand out like Agatha Christie's Miss Marple The mystery itself sometimes got lost in the midst of the village and the inhabitants and then wrapped itself up rather uickly towards the end I received a complimentary copy of this book from Minotaur Books through NetGalley Opinions are mine alone I was not compensated for this review

  10. Jen Jen says:

I received Dressed for Death in Burgundy in a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for my honest reviewLet me start by saying Dressed for Death in Burgundy is the second on a series I haven't read the first in the series but this one could stand alone without too much confusion There were parts of characters' pasts that I didn't understand fully because I didn't read the first installation but it didn't take away from the story anyI am not exactly sure what to say about this mystery I don't know exactly how I feel It was a well put together murder mystery but I just couldn't get into it like some other murder mysteries It may have been the characters Pippa especially something about her rubbed me the wrong way She's living in France for what seems to be the foreseeable future but she doesn't know a word of French and seems to have no intention of learning it That bothers me but it is what it is Over all this was a good cozy murder mystery but I just couldn't connect with it
