I wanted to love this, but it was only okay What I didn t know about this book was that it s the second in a series, but it s touted as a standalone novel The shadow organization that Robert Hutchinson is recruited into is the subject of the first book and its separate protagonist, who shows up at the end of this book Which meant that I was confused, because I didn t know who she was or why she was suddenly there.Hutch, the main character of this book, is recruited out of juvie into a top sec I wanted to love this, but it was only okay What I didn t know about this book was that it s the second in a series, but it s touted as a standalone novel The shadow organization that Robert Hutchinson is recruited into is the subject of the first book and its separate protagonist, who shows up at the end of this book Which meant that I was confused, because I didn t know who she was or why she was suddenly there.Hutch, the main character of this book, is recruited out of juvie into a top secret organization to become a bodyguard to a Future VIP In his case, he is tagged to protect a member of a boy band, so he s renamed Bobby Sky and linked with his subject There wasn t enough boy banding and the link he shares with his subject only goes as far as protective infatuation nothing sexual about it, much to apparently every reviewer s chagrin Even if I were to get a copy of the first book in the series, I don t know if I d read it the author s writing was stilted and unimaginative

More reviews and no fluff on the blog Adding this is not a gay story, there isn t any romance, and it isn t about j pop or pop idols So those looking for those primary elements will want to look elsewhere This is a snarky, fun, edgier mystery with a bit of sci fi.Joe Shine s previous book, I Become Shadow, was a favorite of several of us in our reading group Fun, snarky, and full of action, it was a book you couldn t help but love Sure, there were soMore reviews and no fluff on the blog Adding this is not a gay story, there isn t any romance, and it isn t about j pop or pop idols So those looking for those primary elements will want to look elsewhere This is a snarky, fun, edgier mystery with a bit of sci fi.Joe Shine s previous book, I Become Shadow, was a favorite of several of us in our reading group Fun, snarky, and full of action, it was a book you couldn t help but love Sure, there were some suspension of disbelief moments but who cares when the reading experience was so good With Bobby Sky Boy Band or Die Shine returns to the same world with a story taking place concurrently to Ren s in Shadow The difference is that Boy Band s main character actually likes and appreciates what FATE is doing perhaps a bit too much.Story Hutch is the eternal disappointment of both his mother and the local police he isn t above theft or beating senseless a father hitting his young son with a baseball bat But it appears he s gone too far and ended up in an extended stay in Juvie When a woman visits him and tells him he will die the next day, he s given a choice ignore the lady and take his chances tomorrow or be recruited into a program to save those who will influence the future Hutch goes through the program swimmingly though he hates certain aspects When he gets his first assignment, he s told it will involve following a member of a boy band and ensuring the lead singer survives to fulfill his destiny But there is muchto the picture than Hutch could have envisioned.First and foremost, this isn t a romance boy boy or boy girl Hutch is definitely hetero and spends most of the book falling in and out of lust with various girls He s a very interesting character in that regard he knows what he wants but lacks the emotional depth to really see it through Those who read the first book will recognize how it works with the important person our main characters aren t out to romance them at all.Second, this story is set in the same timeline as the first book concurrently, to be specific So there is one moment when Hutch comes in contact with Ren as she is going through the program as well Otherwise, this is a stand alone and can be read without needing to read the first book By the end, though, you ll want to have read both books since the timelines converge. The boy band aspect takes up a surprisingly small amount of the plot The first half is about FATE, the middle about preparing to join a boy band, and the last is full on action We never really get to know the rest of the boy band much, including the lead singer But I found it amusing that in both books, the important person was a bit of an innocent and sheltered person It made a nice contrast to our reality grounded andaggressive operatives. All the snarky fun of the first book is here Hutch is just as complicated yet simplistic a character as Ren and all the witty bon mots are intact Hutch might be a bit harder to get into since he operates on a fairly shallower level than Wren The book flows so well and really is a pleasure to read There is a surprise at the end I can t wait for book three

ARC provided by Soho Press Soho Teen via NetGalley for an honest review. How can you resist that title Combined with that cover you just have to give this book a shot It ended up being a different read than I expected, it is darker and at times disturbing but still a riveting read that you won t be able to put down It s okay if my story ends here, heck, maybe it s supposed to It has been a ride, I ll give you that I was betrayed, heartbroken, shot, stabbed, and run over And that was just du ARC provided by Soho Press Soho Teen via NetGalley for an honest review. How can you resist that title Combined with that cover you just have to give this book a shot It ended up being a different read than I expected, it is darker and at times disturbing but still a riveting read that you won t be able to put down It s okay if my story ends here, heck, maybe it s supposed to It has been a ride, I ll give you that I was betrayed, heartbroken, shot, stabbed, and run over And that was just during my first year in the program That s not even the good stuff How do plane crashes, death squads, car chases, and the Yakuza sound Are you interested If not, you need to seriously reevaluate what you are looking for in your entertainment needs, because that stuff should raise the eyebrow of a hairless cat I liked Hutch Bobbly almost from the start He is a bad boy with a heart of gold He is also witty and smart, and his attitude often gets him in trouble, but it also gets him out of it at times to The story starts with Hutch at fourteen but by the end he is 19 and an international rock star How he gets there is pretty unbelievable, but through it all he manages to keep his heart and care about what happens to others, even those he doesn t know Even when the program destroys all of his friendships and threatens everyone he cares about he still does all he can to protect them.FATE is one messed up place, and it is pretty brutal and cruel At first Hutch refuses to hit a girl, but they beat that out of him Through his 2 years there he has to kill or die These are kids who were suppose to be dead anyways, so it doesn t matter if they die during their training Things are pretty bleak, but Hutch wants to survive and at times he enjoys his training, like when he learns to fly planes and all types of vehicles He doesn t want to hurt others, but he has to or be hurt himself It is pretty messed up I was happy when he was able to leave that life The story is all told by Hutch Bobby in the first person, which makes itpersonable There are also some futuristic aspects to the story that puts it on the edge of science fiction There is a drug that keeps all of the kids from feeling pain, useful when you are being beaten up on a daily basis And then they use another device to bond you to your FIP, which is kind of messed up If your FIP dies you lose your mind Because the plot covers a huge time span, there is not a lot of time devoted to his time in the Boy Band I would have enjoyed reading about that part of his life a bitThere are huge leaps in time, which were necessary but still jarring at times Overall the plot was fascinating, fast paced and with some twists that made you want to keep reading There was also a bit of a James Bond feel to the story, especially towards the end I thought this was a standalone, but discovered after reading it that there is another book that probably comes before the story in this one Which now explains part of the ending that I was a little confused about Bobby Sky can be read first, as I think it is a story separate from the first But I will let you know after I read the first book, I Become Shadow Hopefully there will be a third book, although there is nothing listed yet A gripping read for fans of James Bond or dark thrillers

How HOW How can an author create a book that is a mixture of hilarious moments, action, and a coming of age tale I m not sure what wizardry happened to create this book, but I am so GLAD it happened I finished Bobby Sky Boy Band or Die in very few sittings, and I couldn t wait to get back to it each time I had to stop reading What a fun book I read it not realizing it was something that takes place in the same universe as another of the author s books Everything made sense alone Actuall How HOW How can an author create a book that is a mixture of hilarious moments, action, and a coming of age tale I m not sure what wizardry happened to create this book, but I am so GLAD it happened I finished Bobby Sky Boy Band or Die in very few sittings, and I couldn t wait to get back to it each time I had to stop reading What a fun book I read it not realizing it was something that takes place in the same universe as another of the author s books Everything made sense alone Actually, I didn t even realize it until I was preparing to write my review But I did add that other book to my list. This whole teen spy protector killer thing is quickly becoming one of my favorite sub genres Maybe because I always liked The Americans tv series or Charlie s Angels Hutch is a protagonist that I may not identify much with, but I really liked following him around He s smart, snarky, and the glamour of being a pop star was an interesting situation to place him in The good news there s not a lot of actual romance There are bits and pieces here and there, but nothing overarching I m not a huge romance fan so it was great for me.There is a twist at the end that I LOVED I know some folks will not like it because they have to wait for book three, but I dig a good twist and cliffhanger.I m off to read book 1 in this universe I Become Shadow

Two stars instead of one for the book having entertaining moments, with a story that keeps moving without a dull moment But that s where my enjoyment of the book ends As an avid fan of k pop boy bands I picked up the book because of the title I was disappointed The author skips over all the boyband parts Also never establishes any of the characters, so you don t care when anyone dies You also have no vested interest in shipping any of the boyband members, because again no characters are de Two stars instead of one for the book having entertaining moments, with a story that keeps moving without a dull moment But that s where my enjoyment of the book ends As an avid fan of k pop boy bands I picked up the book because of the title I was disappointed The author skips over all the boyband parts Also never establishes any of the characters, so you don t care when anyone dies You also have no vested interest in shipping any of the boyband members, because again no characters are developed and it s just a backdrop to all the action The story reads like a teenage boy s wetdream The story is narrated by Hutch, the teenage badboy with a heart of gold He s recruited into be a secret agent in a secret organization And because he s a mary sue, great at everything, he s assigned to a mission where he joins the greatest up and coming international boyband Then he gets to be adored by millions of fangirls while also being a badass getting in gun flights and surviving plane crashes and whatever And I found Hutch to be completely unlikable Described as having long greasy hair from not showering enough Yuck And all girls make him horny and thus he hits on anything with boobs With pickup lines, and I m paraphrasing here because I m too lazy to look up the exact quote, What s your name sweetheart Because you re going to be the future Ms Hutch shutters What a creep He views himself as a savior to women And he loooves fighting Oh great, a macho womanizing asshole from Texas Every fangirl s dream eyeroll I have a feeling the author did no research about boy bands or fangirls I could be wrong
