Men and women are made for each other, but their mutual dependence is not equal We could survive without women better than they could without men They are dependent on our feelings, on the price we put on their merits, on the value we set on their attractions and on their virtues Thus women s entire education should be planned in relation to men To please men, to be useful to them, to win their love and respect, to raise them as children, to care for them as adults, counsel and console Men and women are made for each other, but their mutual dependence is not equal We could survive without women better than they could without men They are dependent on our feelings, on the price we put on their merits, on the value we set on their attractions and on their virtues Thus women s entire education should be planned in relation to men To please men, to be useful to them, to win their love and respect, to raise them as children, to care for them as adults, counsel and console them, make their lives sweet and pleasant, Jean Jaques Rousseau, 1762Although author Susan Alice Watkins gives respectful nods to pioneers like the Greek poet Sappho 650 b.c.e and Joan of Arc 1412 1431 , her chronology of feminist history really begins with Mary Wollstonecraft 1759 1797 and her publication of A Vindication of the Rights of Women 1792 She follows this up with 200 years of highlights and lowlights of the excruciatingly slow evolution and progression of women s rights Why is this taking so long Why is equal worth not common sense I look at the state of the world today and I see very modest change, and, in some arenas, no change at all My edition of Feminism for Beginners was published in 1992 and it does not speak well of Ronald Reagan and his misogynistic policies I wonder how Watkins would respond to 2016 and the election of a man who makes Ronald Reagan look like Gloria Steinem This is a nice introduction to feminist history and thought My only complaint is with the illustrations, some of which are a little sophomoric and crude Subject matter this important deserves better artwork

The book broke all my surface level contemporary understanding of feminism There are so many kinds of feminism There are these heroines who have revolutionized the world by how resilient and progressive their ideologies were in as stubbornly a patriarchial world as 18th and 19th century Some of their thoughts and books are so amazingly beautiful like Greer s heterosexuality being a thing that supports oppresion, Sojourner truth s conviction and her Ain t I a woman speech despite her being ill The book broke all my surface level contemporary understanding of feminism There are so many kinds of feminism There are these heroines who have revolutionized the world by how resilient and progressive their ideologies were in as stubbornly a patriarchial world as 18th and 19th century Some of their thoughts and books are so amazingly beautiful like Greer s heterosexuality being a thing that supports oppresion, Sojourner truth s conviction and her Ain t I a woman speech despite her being illiterate, Ann Oadley s myth of motherhood, the thalatic pornography and fashion industry degrading women s identity Radical feminist is what I am Romance novels, accepting social norms, marriage etc encouraging oppression My mind s blown away There is so much to Feminism, equality just being a small aspect of it Wow

Good basic introduction to feminism Tries to cover everything but of course that means that it only gives very brief details, however this makes it a good starting point from which to research further information about the bits that really interest you The book only goes up to 1990 so not the best book for people interested inrecent feminist theory or achievements.

Well, it did what it said on the tin, and introduced feminism So things were missed out, nothing was explored in detail which was frustrating at times for me when something got interesting but for an overview book you can t ask for a lotAlthough I was surprised by some of the things that were missed out They mentioned the Pankhursts, but didn t mention the horse incident Marie Stopes doesn t get a mention at all.It was published in 1994 but some of it felt properly out of date Ok, 1 Well, it did what it said on the tin, and introduced feminism So things were missed out, nothing was explored in detail which was frustrating at times for me when something got interesting but for an overview book you can t ask for a lotAlthough I was surprised by some of the things that were missed out They mentioned the Pankhursts, but didn t mention the horse incident Marie Stopes doesn t get a mention at all.It was published in 1994 but some of it felt properly out of date Ok, 1994 is almost 20 years ago ek but there are moments in this book when it feels like we re still very much stuck in the seventies And also moments when it felt as though they were teetering on the edge about to go into extremism, man hating for the sake of it etcI liked the kind of magazine, funky style of representing chunks of history, thoughts and ideas It made it entertaining to read and accessible

Written in the early 90 s during the emerging third wave, this primer is using the intersectional framework of that time, but 25 years later, many sections read as written in the 70 s Overall it does what it sets out to do It introduces the history and theories and people behind feminism It s heavily western centric but doesn t completely ignore the struggle of womyn in other parts of the world I d be curious to read the updated edition Overall I d be happy to give this to anyone in my life Written in the early 90 s during the emerging third wave, this primer is using the intersectional framework of that time, but 25 years later, many sections read as written in the 70 s Overall it does what it sets out to do It introduces the history and theories and people behind feminism It s heavily western centric but doesn t completely ignore the struggle of womyn in other parts of the world I d be curious to read the updated edition Overall I d be happy to give this to anyone in my life who is up for learning about feminism theory and history
