Marple and Mellor There Are Over Two Hundred Old Photographs In This Book, Many Of Which Have Never Been Published Before The Pictures Of Street Scenes, Events, People, Shops And Mills Cover The Area That Is Marple, Mellor And Ludworth.Situated On The Edge Of The Manchester Conurbation, With The Hills Of The Pennines As A Back Drop, The Area Still Retains Much Open Land Despite The Building Boom Of The Sixties First It Was A District Of Small Farms And Hamlets Where The People Made A Living From The Poor Land By Supplementing Their Incomes With The Production Of Textiles At Home Then It Was For Over A Century And A Half A Collection Of Villages With Cotton Mills, Coal Mines And Outlying Farms The Peak Forest And Macclesfield Canals Were Built During This Period Today The Area Is A Mixture Of Old And New Houses Mostly Lived In By Commuters To The Nearby Towns Of Stockport And Manchester.The Author, Who Is A Chairman Of Marple Local History Society, Has Collected Photographs And Old Postcards Of The Area Almost From The Time She Moved To Mellor Twenty Seven Years Ago First Becoming Interested In The Industrial History Of The Area, Her Interest Has Widened To Include All Aspects Of The Past.This Book Will Appeal To All Those Who Know The Area Whether As Residents, Old And New, Or As One Of Its Many Visitors.
