My dad recommended this book to me back in the day As a celibate priest my perspective is lacking the first hand experience of a married man But from what I can tell this book has a lot of good practical advice about how to honor cherish and love a womanThe book has a pre 1960s feel about it which I personally find charming although certain phrases and assumptions might be seen as somewhat sexist today like the assumption that the wife will be a homemakerAlthough a bit dated this book has some great wisdom to share with the modern man on how to be a good husband One caveat The chapter on sex might be taken to imply that anything goes as long as it’s with one’s spouse which is not necessarily compatible with the Catholic view see eg Christopher West “Good News about Sex and Marriage” Just sayin’

I received this book from my girlfriend as a gag gift since my name is in the title It's a pretty amusing read as a novelty book and a glimpse into a bygone cultural era but I'm surprised to find that some still seriously regard this book as a source for helpful relationship advice as evinced in the high ratings it has received The title on the front cover on how to treat a woman and the description on the back of the book—Shedd composed a series of letters offering his eldest son experience tested advice about dealing with females—should already feel off putting and unidirectional in perspective as if females are a different species to be dealt with by men I would not go so far as to claim that all the advice offered here is outdated but we do not see a feminist perspective offered in a text published at the height of the feminist movement in the mid 1970s The first letter entitled Take Charge advises that a woman desires nothing than a strong leader because she has what you might call a feminine mystiue about the futureThe female mind has an innate something that looks to this day and on down the road at the same time More essentialist assertions to reinforce traditional gender roles and Dr Shedd appeals to some convoluted ethos about how it's our patriotic duty to play out these God given gender roles Much of the advice offered in the book isn't terrible per se so much as the fact that it should already be obvious enough to obviate the need for advice in the first place such as the fifteenth letter Treat her as a person Oh really Shucks I didn't realize that women were human beings who deserved the same dignity as any man Is this book written for the clueless misogynist who finds it revelatory that maybe we shouldn't beat women Though presented as a series of letters from father to son these essays do not have a personal feel to them They feel like they were written for a public audience Each letter offers about a paragraph or two of substantial advice preceded by several pages of long winded anecdotes where the author is trying to sound clever Sorry Dr Shedd I'm not amused except ironically

Definitely a Christian perspectivebut possibly useful There is a lot of practical advice amidst the folksy sayings and anecdotes and it flows fairly well
