A very episodic but pleasant book about Alice an only child growing up with loving parents in 1930s Maine in the town of Damariscotta In chapters that read like short stories and are interspersed with poems Alice explores the landscape and people around her home She's presented as an imaginative girl who reverences both natural beauty and the remnants of local history she encounters In almost every chapter Alice does things along the lines of exploring abandoned farms overgrown since the owners went out West befriending the last known carver of figureheads and admiring elderly neighbors' antiues her own family appear to have plenty of their own; no brash new comers they She also enjoys the changing seasons and at one point has a half tame seal living on the banks of her riverside home The book is at once frustrating because of the complete lack of narrative urgency but lovely because I understand how seductive the melancholy of old things evoking half forgotten times can be It's not a book to be read for the story but for the evocation of place I'm reminded slightly of the fiction of Elizabeth Enright who also does episodic encounters with the past and nature but Enright has some magic that Coatsworth doesn't uite have I think it's in the wit and characterization that keeps her books alive to this day whereas Alice All by Herself is now a half forgotten relic in its own right
