Really interesting art it really does come off as a translation from a play Abrupt ending, though pacing was off after the one year time skip

I saw The Blue Dragon live on stage last year and it was a wonderful experience It made me a believer in theater, that people don t just pay out the nose to see plays because it s a classy thing to do, but because theater can create evocative, emotional experiences I picked up the graphic novel and let it sit on the shelf for a year and a half, and once I picked it up and read it it brought me back to that same dull and hopeless atmosphere that the stage production created. What I find astoni I saw The Blue Dragon live on stage last year and it was a wonderful experience It made me a believer in theater, that people don t just pay out the nose to see plays because it s a classy thing to do, but because theater can create evocative, emotional experiences I picked up the graphic novel and let it sit on the shelf for a year and a half, and once I picked it up and read it it brought me back to that same dull and hopeless atmosphere that the stage production created. What I find astonishing about The Blue Dragon is that, being a play GN with only three speaking parts, it still manages to pass the Bechdel Test i.e are there two ornamed female characters, who at some point talk to each other about something other than a man Many movies and other stories fail this test The interactions between Claire and Xiao Ling fascinated me and I couldn t figure out why, but I now realized that it is rare in movies etc for two women to go out together and not talk about the man they have in common.I know I didn t actually talk about the story much in this review, but I definitely recommend checking it out, especially if you re into stories with a drab and hopeless tone

Even though I wasn t a big fan of the way the characters were drawn in this book, there are some very striking images in this graphic novel Full pages where you re just smacked in the face by some wonder inky brush work The story, on the other hand, feels a little half baked to me I do think the characters in The Blue Dragon are defined well enough, but the plot feels like it skips over some scenes outside of the time jump What I did like about this story was that the characters are all a Even though I wasn t a big fan of the way the characters were drawn in this book, there are some very striking images in this graphic novel Full pages where you re just smacked in the face by some wonder inky brush work The story, on the other hand, feels a little half baked to me I do think the characters in The Blue Dragon are defined well enough, but the plot feels like it skips over some scenes outside of the time jump What I did like about this story was that the characters are all a bit miserable, and I m a sucker for stories about people wallowing in their own mess So even though I m giving The Blue Dragon two stars, I still think this is worth checking out

This graphic novelization of the popular play isa work of art than a simple literary piece The story is an interesting tale of baby adoption and Chinese culture A tale about personal journey as well as national fidelity.Though the story is complex, Lepage and Michaud chose a minimalist approach to the wording of this narrative and, appropriately so This approach not only meaningfully distilled the story, but let Jourdain s art play an integral part in sharing the story with the reader This graphic novelization of the popular play isa work of art than a simple literary piece The story is an interesting tale of baby adoption and Chinese culture A tale about personal journey as well as national fidelity.Though the story is complex, Lepage and Michaud chose a minimalist approach to the wording of this narrative and, appropriately so This approach not only meaningfully distilled the story, but let Jourdain s art play an integral part in sharing the story with the reader As much for the story as for the artistic style, I recommend this work for the avid reader of beautiful fiction
